Using up odds and ends

I started a pair of Norwegian Mittens around Christmas time and they have given me no end of trouble, so for the time being they've been put on the backburner, whilst I see whether I can source some more yarn!

In the meantime, I've cast on a pair of "Pirate Mittens" from Hello Yarn, or at least something that will resemble this pattern. The pattern is free and can be downloaded via the link above. I have made a few alterations to the cuff, but will be using the scull and crossbone motifs from the pattern and the basic pattern will remain reasonably true to the original.

For this wee project I'm using up a combination of sock yarn and some other fourply yarn from the stash. The cuff, shown above, is knit in Regia sockyarn in the two colours 1933 (dark greys) and 4190 (cream to light grey). For the main body of the hand and thumb I will be patterning using Regia 1933 and Patons Kroy socks 54008 (cream).

I hope to make two pairs pretty quickly, and rather than knitting the year on the mittens I plan to knit the recipients' names on then instead. That way it won't matter that two boys, only a few years apart, get very similar mittens, as they'll always be able to tell them apart. :)

I do hope you will post a picture of the mittens with the boy's names knitted into them Wow. I am imagining names like Cy and Joe. Be still my heart if they are Bartholomew and Aloyisius. Gently teasing you. But I am impressed!

Thank you Tiennie - and happy 2009 to you too.

Karen - LOL, Luke and Erik were the names I was planning on, but I would fit in Aloyisius (WOT a cool name!) and all, but that would be all around the wrist. :)

Pictures will follow...

What lovely mittens those will make. I bought a sweater with a very similar pattern in Norway many years ago. It's so warm though that I only wear it once every few years - it just doesn't get that cold here LOL.

Robin - those Norwegian sweaters are absolutely beautiful, but OH SO HOT!
Pictures will follow, once I finish. :)
